      RnR  Newsletter - April/May 2004

Hi there,

What an interesting couple of months it has been with plenty of action out at the Mokes.

Prevailing Nor’easterlies have brought a consistent easterly metre swell to the area but at least we’ve been spared those less productive southerlies.

While the really big snapper have proven somewhat elusive lately there has been plenty of variety with Pink Maomao, Trevally, Granddaddy Hapuku, Hapuku, Red Snapper (Alfonso), Blue Cod, Kahawai and Kingi.

Some good line strips and bust offs have left some fishermen with that tantalising taste of what could have been……………  There have been schools of Kahawai – such a great sport on light gear for the recreational fisherman.

What a shame this country’s Kahawai stocks are being depleted by commercial fishing – to be used as fish meal?!  If you see the value in classing the Kahawai as a sporting fish only, send in a submission to the Option4 website – see under “Links”

Hapuku season appears to be on us already with the aid of a chunky berley trail and by using strong trace (150-200lb plus), so come prepared with some Hapuku rigs on your RnR charter.

We can not stress enough how important it is to choose fresh frozen bait.  Look for large pillies without any sign of yellow mucous around the gills and stomach area.  It must look like it has just come out of the sea.  As for squid, choose packets with large pale cream squid, if it is pink it is probably freezer burnt.

For this year’s Furuno fishing competition (March 18th-20th), we had the pleasure of hosting Billy Hohepa and Linda  along with their lively film crew.

For a few days RnR became the film set for a TV programme about a young woman discovering the world of fishing under Billy’s colourful guidance.  It was interesting to catch a glimpse “behind the scenes” and learn a little of what’s involved in the filming of programmes such as these.

Thanks to Billy and co. for a very enjoyable 3 days!

As a result of the increasing demand from partners booking charters as ‘presents’ for their loved ones we have introduced the RnR Gift voucher. The perfect gift available in various denominations can be given to the nominated recipient, for them to book their chosen day.  Or better still, if you’d prefer one for yourself, no harm in dropping a few subtle hints – print off the info page on this website and leave it lying conspicuously around the house.

Happy Days
